(WKBN) -- October is recognized as National Adopt a Shelter Dog Month, and in recognition, the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction (ODRC) is sharing how inmates help shelter dogs get adopted.

The ODRC hosts dog training programs in correctional facilities across the state, allowing incarcerated adults to train adoptable shelter dogs, offering hope, teaching responsibility and giving them a way to give back to their community.

The ODRC says that while the training makes dogs more appealing to potential adopters, it is often the trainers who experience the most profound transformation.

“Programs like these change the atmosphere inside a facility, and we see real transformation when incarcerated adults take part in it," said Mike Fisher, Warden of Madison Correctional Institut
