Rickard Rakell is out six to eight weeks after undergoing surgery on his left hand.
The Penguins said the surgery was performed Sunday morning by Dr. John Fowler at UPMC Mercy Hospital, in collaboration with head team physician Dr. Dharmesh Vyas.
With Rakell expected to be sidelined into December, the Penguins recalled rookie winger Ville Koivunen from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League.
Koivunen arrived in time to participate in the team’s practice Sunday in Cranberry.
Rakell, a top-line forward who scored 35 goals last season, was injured in Saturday’s shootout loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets at PPG Paints Arena.
