ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ) - An inmate’s death is under investigation at the Roanoke City Adult Detention Center, according to the Roanoke City Sheriff’s Office.

An individual in a cell was exhibiting signs of medical distress Sunday, October 26 at 5:55 a.m., according to deputies. Deputies say medical staff were notified and immediately initiated an assessment and provided lifesaving measures, including CPR, until Roanoke City Fire/EMS personnel arrived at 6:04 a.m. and assumed care.

Despite all efforts, the individual was later pronounced dead on site at 6:32 a.m.

The identity of the individual has not been released.

Virginia State Police have taken over the investigation.
