EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WFIE) - The Evansville nonprofit Southwest Indiana Recovery and Empowerment (SWIRE) is launching an innovative reentry and recovery support program at the Vanderburgh County Jail.
Officials say SWIRE’s goal is to help those incarcerated with a successful community reentry when they are released and hopefully lower recidivism rates.
It’s a brand new, peer-led support program. meaning those who work for SWIRE have lived experiences in recovery and incarceration, including the executive director.
“For me, it’s important to be here because I’ve been there. I’ve walked out of the doors of this very jail with a bus token and not known where I was going to go. And that is hard,” Katherine Beyers said. “I want to be there for people when they’re in that position.”
