A man has been taken into custody after heavily-armed police swooped on a home in Melbourne's west.

Police were called to a home on Forrest Street in Albion following reports a man was pointing a gun at people about 1.40pm today.

Uniformed police, along with specialist unit officers, swarmed the street and arrested the 40-year-old man following a tense stand-off.

He is now being questioned by detectives.

It was later confirmed the gun was an imitation firearm, police said.

Police remain at the property and a dog was seen being taken from the home.

More to come.
