(KIMT) -- As of 4 AM Monday, Hurricane Melissa is a Category 5 storm with maximum sustained winds of 160 MPH. The storm has continued a slow jog to the west around 3 MPH, using the warm waters of the Caribbean Sea to strengthen.
Eventually, Melissa will recurve northeastward, making landfall on Jamaica early Tuesday morning as a likely Category 5 hurricane. According to the National Hurricane Center (NHC), up to 40 inches of rain could fall in portions of Jamaica. Life-threatening flash flooding and landslides are expected in Jamaica, Haiti, and eastern Cuba.
