There were roughly 100,000 fewer vehicle thefts across the United States in the first half of 2025 than during the same time period last year, new data shows.
Last month, the National Insurance Crime Bureau released a new data analysis finding that there were 334,114 vehicle thefts reported in the first six months of 2025, roughly 23% fewer than the 435,754 reported in the first half of 2024.
Vehicle thefts across the country surged during the coronavirus pandemic, peaking at 1,020,729 in 2023, the highest reported number since 2008, according to past NICB reports.
However, numbers are now trending back down towards pre-pandemic levels, with the country on pace to record a second straight year of declining vehicle thefts.
