Dry, fallen leaves skittered across the concrete sidewalk outside the Seattle Public Library’s Central Library the morning of Oct. 8, tumbling directionless in the cold wind as homelessness advocates prepared to place five bronze leaves that would weather wind and time.

The leaves are headstones. There are already 17 leaves on the opposite side of the library, and 40 more placed this year across several locations.
