The FDA has issued an Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) for an animal drug to treat dogs and puppies infected with the parasite New World screwworm (NWS).

The majority of dogs in the U.S. are at low risk of NWS, but dogs near the U.S.-Mexico border are more likely to be exposed.

Animals and humans become infected with NWS when the parasite lays eggs on and in open wounds.
