CHARLESTON — Former North Charleston Councilman Mike Brown acknowledged his role in the sweeping federal corruption probe centered on the state’s third-largest city one week before he was set to go to trial.

Brown, 47, pleaded guilty in a federal courthouse in downtown Charleston on Oct. 27 to one count of conspiracy to commit bribery and wire fraud. He grabbed several tissues to wipe his eyes after signing the agreement in front of U.S. District Judge Richard Gergel.

The plea comes nearly eight months after charges came out against him. He initially pleaded not guilty on March 11 , prompting Gov. Henry McMaster to suspend him from his position on City Council until the case was resolved.
