East Coweta struggled early but surged in the fourth quarter to stun Westlake 28-27 on Friday night, securing its first victory over the Lions since 2015.
The Indians opened the game with a defensive stand, forcing a punt on Westlake’s opening possession. East Coweta then marched 68 yards, highlighted by a 52-yard run by Ricky Howell.
On first-and-20 from the Westlake 22, quarterback Jax Bowles connected with Sam Gritton for a 22-yard touchdown and a 7-0 lead.
The defense delivered another three-and-out, and East Coweta threatened again, reaching the Westlake 11. However, a fumble at the goal line was recovered by Westlake and returned to its own 8-yard line, shifting momentum.
