Midway through his fourth season in Gainesville, the University of Florida paid Billy Napier 21 million dollars just to go away.
Posting the first losing record with the Gators since Raymond Wolf in the late 1940s, Napier leaves behind a legacy of unfilled promise. Missed opportunities, poor offensive play-calling (because of his stubborn refusal to hire an offensive coordinator), and an overall record of 22–23 led to his downfall.
Since Steve Spurrier’s 12 outstanding years as the Gator head coach (122–27–1, an 82 percent winning percentage and one national championship), his successors, with the exception of Urban Meyer’s six successful seasons in which he won 81 percent of the time (65–15 and two national championships), have combined to win just over 60 percent of the time (129–85).
