NEW YORK (PIX11) — The death of New York Jets legend Nick Mangold is raising awareness for organ donation.

On Saturday, the seven-time Pro Bowl center passed away suddenly at the age of 41. Earlier this month, Mangold announced that he needed a new kidney and was searching for a donor on social media, saying he "always knew this would happen" but thought he'd have more time.

Approximately 100,000 Americans are currently waiting for an organ donor. About 80% of those waiting need a kidney and are on dialysis, like Mangold was.
