COLUMBUS, Ohio — Diane Lewis was at work on Monday morning when a news notification on her phone took her right back to July 29, 2008.

The notification alerted her to a shooting Sunday night in Columbus. Police said a 7-year-old boy got access to an unsecured weapon and shot himself. He was pronounced dead at the home on Grandview Ave. The shooting remains under investigation.

In 2008, Lewis lost her 7-year-old son, Isaiah, to an accidental shooting. He was left alone with his young cousin at his uncle’s house when police said the children got access to an unsecured rifle. Isaiah was shot and killed.

“I can replay that phone call like it just happened this morning,” Lewis said.

Since that tragedy, Lewis has advocated for safe gun storage.
