The union representing Minneapolis Public Schools teachers announced that its members have voted "overwhelmingly" in favor of a strike amid stalled talks on a new contract for educations.
The Minneapolis Federation of Educators Local 59 says around 92% of more than 3,600 teachers, educational support professionals (ESPs), and adult educators voted in favor of authorizing strike action.
This does not mean a strike will happen, but it means the union can give the school district 10 days notice before the first day of a strike. MFE says it will not be filing any intent to strike before Thursday, when another mediation session is scheduled with Minneapolis Public Schools.
"No one wants to strike, but district leaders have left us no choice," said Marcia Howard, MFE teacher chapter president
