Hurricane Melissa made landfall at noon today as one of the most powerful Atlantic hurricanes on record. Pressures this morning dropped to 892 mb by the time it made landfall near New Hope on the Southwest Coast of Jamaica. Winds were estimated to be 185 mph or equivalent to an EF-4 tornado.

This storm will be historic for Jamaica and the Atlantic. It is the strongest recorded hurricane to hit Jamaica and one of the strongest landfalling hurricanes ever recorded in the Atlantic. By wind at landfall, it ties the "Labor Day" Hurricane of 1935 and Hurricane Dorian of 2019 with 185 mph winds. By pressure, it ties again the "Labor Day" Hurricane at 892 mb. Other storms had lower pressures or higher winds, but not at landfall.
