KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — The Salvation Army of Knoxville is asking the community to help meet a surge in food assistance requests, which have risen three to five times above normal levels in recent weeks.

The nonprofit announced a new emergency food campaign, “Feed Hope. Share Love,” to support those in Knox, Blount, Sevier, Cocke, Anderson and Campbell counties.

Gov. Bill Lee has warned that beginning Nov. 1, Tennessee residents receiving SNAP benefits may experience a lapse due to the ongoing federal government shutdown.

The organization's Knoxville, Maryville and Sevierville locations are providing food boxes, utility assistance and emergency aid to families in need. The Maryville location operates a "Free Food Friday and Fellowship" program, while other locations offer ongoing pantry s
