TYLER, Texas — Hearing loss impacts not only a person's health, but health professionals say it also impacts their quality of life. It can lead to social isolation, depression and even cognitive decline. During Audiology Awareness Month, experts are encouraging people to seek help early and protect their hearing health.
Dr. Andrea Gohmert, an audiology doctor with UT Health East Texas and UT Tyler, joined CBS19's Wellness Wednesday to discuss the importance of early detection and treatment.
"Hearing loss is very common," Gohmert said. "It affects about 1.5 billion people worldwide, and in the U.S., roughly one in eight adults experience hearing loss. What's troubling is that most people wait an average of seven years before seeking help."
