PEORIA, Ill. (WMBD) -- For having a handgun with a "switch" that made it fully automatic, a Peoria man was sentenced Wednesday to 6 1/2 years in prison.
D'Berry M. Coleman, 19, pleaded guilty to unlawful use of a weapon. It's the class X version, which is not probationable and carries a punishment range of six to 30 years behind bars.
The 78-month sentence imposed by Peoria County Circuit Judge Steve Kouri was near the bottom of the sentencing range.
Coleman was only 17, a minor under Illinois law, prosecutors allege, when he had a loaded handgun with an extended magazine. The handgun had a switch making it a full-auto machine gun, prosecutors allege.
