The third time was the charm for Soundgarden with the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
The Seattle group, a progenitor and mainstay of the “grunge” movement of the late ’80s and ’90s, was nominated twice before — in 2020 and 2023 — before finally breaking through this year. It finished sixth in the fan vote with 233,205 votes. It will also be a second induction for drummer Matt Cameron, who entered the shrine with Pearl Jam in 2017.
There’s a bittersweet aspect to the honor, of course. Soundgarden’s career — six studio albums, two Grammy Awards and enduring hits such as “Black Hole Sun,” “Spoonman” and “Fell On Black Days — became dormant on May 18, 2017, when frontman Chris Cornell died by suicide following a concert in Detroit.
