The Weyburn Police Service has been handling more non-criminal matters this past week, with a reported uptick in hit and runs, traffic-related complaints, and well-being checks. Deputy Chief Shane St. John says he isn’t aware of any catalyst behind the sudden increases.
Hit and runs: Making a bad situation worse
Hit and run incidents have been on the rise all year, according to St. John, indicating it has little to do with varying road conditions.
“I think it's just people not paying attention and then not realizing that if you are caught or found out to be the person responsible, there are much more severe consequences. And it'll go to the registered owner if we don't know who the driver is, but we can identify the vehicle.”
