AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - Fourteen local churches distributed food to a record 306 families during their October mobile market, representing more than 700 people seeking emergency food assistance.

The Downtown Cooperative Church Ministries held their largest drive-through food distribution event since starting the program in 2020.

About a quarter of the people who came were first-time recipients, according to Dennis Sodomka, vice president of the organization.

“Mostly we’re here as sort of an emergency help. We don’t give enough food to feed the family for the whole month, but if there’s a need they know they can come here and get enough food to get them through an emergency,” Sodomka said. “We found most of our clients work and some have two jobs and still don’t have enough money to
