GOLDEN CITY, Mo. (KY3) - Volunteers in Golden City have stepped in to serve meals to senior citizens after funding cuts surprised the community and threatened the meal program.
The Golden City Community Center provides lunch once a week to residents ages 60 and older, but the government shutdown cut off funding for the program.
The future of the senior lunch program remains uncertain as organizers run out of money and rely entirely on community donations to continue operations.
“They are scared, I could see fear in their eyes today, but I kept telling them Don’t worry, we are going to take care of you,” said Kristi Walters of the Golden City Community Center. “The community center is, and that’s what we do.”
