MONROE COUNTY, Tenn. — The family of a man who died after being detained in the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office jail will receive more than $2 million following a jury verdict against Monroe County and multiple correction officers.
Joshua McCleary died in 2022 at Sweetwater Hospital after being held at the jail for nearly four days. The lawsuit said corrections officers failed to provide McCleary his diabetes medication, despite knowing he was diabetic.
The lawsuit says he requested medical attention multiple times from jail staff, but did not receive it. On the morning of October 31st, McCleary was taken to the medical unit in a wheelchair, with complaints of "troubled breathing". His blood sugar was 600, and his O2 was 66%.
