MINNEAPOLIS — At least two dozen high schools are scrambling to figure out where they'll hold graduations this spring after the University of Minnesota abruptly canceled ceremonies at Mariucci Arena.

The University told administrators about the decision on Tuesday and, in a statement to KARE 11 on Wednesday, said it's too expensive to host the events.

A spokesperson wrote, in part, " We fully appreciate this represents a change and remain focused on our students, safety for all, operations, and core mission at a time when higher education is facing significant challenges. Hosting more than 20 outside events with thousands of attendees over a two-week period represents a significant strain on the University’s limited resources that is no longer sustainable. "
