AKRON, Ohio — Tom Moyer, 64, has learned to measure time differently these days.
"I'm just here every day as I don't know if I'm gonna wake up or not," the Marine said from his room at Grace House Akron, where photos of his granddaughters line the walls.
Last week, Tom prepared for something he'd been planning for months: prom night with his 21-year-old granddaughter, Summer.
A family forged through tragedy
Tom helped raise Summer and her younger sister Abby after their mother, Lana, was murdered. Looking at a wedding photo on his wall, Tom pointed to the image.
"That's me walking Lana down to the person that killed her," he said quietly.
After the tragedy, Tom became everything to the two young girls.
