A federal judge has certified a class-action lawsuit allowing transgender Florida prison inmates to collectively challenge the denial of specific clothing and grooming accommodations used to treat gender dysphoria.

Chief U.S. District Judge Allen Winsor last week granted class-action status on the “accommodations issue,” which stems from state corrections officials barring transgender inmates from accessing items like certain clothing and makeup. The lawsuit, filed in October 2024 after the state revamped its policies on transgender inmates, targets changes that included barring these specific accommodations for those with gender dysphoria.
