GRIFFIN, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - Food pantries across metro Atlanta are working to keep up with a growing demand for assistance as Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits are just days away from expiring.

In Griffin, Manna From Above Food Pantry is doing what it can to stretch every bit of food to reach more families. The pantry has cut its distributions from four bags of food per family to two as calls for help continue to spike ahead of the Nov. 1 SNAP benefits expiration date, should the government shutdown continue.

Pantry organizers said almost 30 new families have called searching for food on Wednesday alone.

They say over a dozen first-time recipients reached out on Tuesday, and nearly half that amount contacted the pantry on Monday.
