SPRINGFIELD, Tenn. (WKRN) — While the federal government remains at a standstill, community members are stepping up across Middle Tennessee.

In Robertson County, a Springfield restaurant owner is stepping up to feed families who could lose their benefits.

Matthew Richardson runs Willie Mae's Barbeque in Springfield.

Richardson said the restaurant business is a tough one, but keeping people from going hungry is his mission.

"It's a no brainer," Richardson said. "People are in need, and we help out. We do what we can. It's not really a thought. It's just automatic."

When he heard that SNAP benefits are set to run out if the government remains shut down, he decided to take action.
