A car has burst into flames on the M8 in Lanarkshire on Thursday morning, sparking an emergency response.

Emergency crews were called to the motorway near Newhouse , following the blaze around 10.30am on October 30.

Police closed the motorway eastbound between junctions six and five as fire crews worked to extinguish the inferno. Traffic was also restricted westbound, reports the Daily Record .

Pictures and footage from the scene showed the vehicle in flames with plumes of thick black smoke billowing up into the sky.

A fire engine could be seen arriving at the scene as other vehicles slowly passed by. Motorists have been asked to avoid the area.
