Federal agents conducting immigration enforcement chased a fleeing suspect into a suburban school building, leading to an altercation that unfolded in front of students and staff, authorities said Thursday.

The Gurnee Police Department said it was notified that federal law enforcement agencies were pursuing a vehicle they said was "occupied by individuals who had been previously deported for felony offenses."

The pursuit, which started outside of Gurnee and led to numerous crashed in multiple suburbs, entered the Gurnee area just before 8:30 a.m., the department said, noting that it was not involved in the chase.
