Waterloo city council approved up to 803 more homes this week, mostly apartments, with the hope that developers will build them to help move the city past its housing crisis.

One approved project aims to bring a nine-storey apartment building with 169 units to Erb Street West, between Dunbar Road North and Roslin Avenue North. It would replace seven detached, vacant houses.

Global development firm 360 Pacifica revised its proposal following public feedback. The building that council approved Monday has shed a 10th storey and has been made more slender.

“The proposal has really improved,” Coun. Julie Wright said in support.

Redevelopment on the property has been in the works for a decade in a central neighbourhood that’s becoming taller and denser, Wright said.
