A man has been fined $8000 for his handling of asbestos sheets in what a commissioner has called "selfish neglect ... for the safety of other workers and members of the public".

"This incident is yet another troubling example of a trader taking dangerous shortcuts in a high-risk situation, showing a blatant disregard for legal obligations and the safety of people in our community," ACT Work Health and Safety Commissioner Jacqueline Agius said.

Benjamin Hannaford, 47, was sentenced in the ACT Magistrates Industrial Court on Thursday, October 30.

He had previously pleaded guilty to failing to comply with a health and safety duty, exposing individuals to risk of death, injury or serious illness.
