ACT government officials considered charging upwards of $35 for a volunteer Working with Vulnerable People check (WWVP) despite acknowledging the move did not align with the government's own strategy, FOI documents reveal.

Documents released under freedom of information laws show the ACT government's aborted $11 WWVP charge for volunteers , which was announced as part of the 2025-26 budget, could have cost residents more than $35.

In an email sent in January 2025, an Access Canberra executive manager noted that "appetite for charging volunteers remains low", but options "should be put forward including upwards of $35".

The released government email stated that the communications and messaging on the rollout of a fee would emphasise tax deductibility.
