MICHIGAN, USA — Gov. Gretchen Whitmer announced on Friday that the State of Michigan will provide $4.5 million to the Food Bank Council of Michigan amid the federal government's decision to pause Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits starting on Nov. 1.

MDHHS said the pause in monthly benefits would affect 1.4 million Michiganders. Nationwide, SNAP benefits 42 million Americans.

“Hungry families cannot wait for the folks in power in Washington, DC to do their jobs,” said Whitmer.

The new funding will help feed Michiganders in all 83 counties and provide food delivery to those who can't drive to their local food bank.

The state is also bringing together public and private philanthropic support resources to help families impacted by the disruption of SNAP benefits.
