FOND DU LAC, Wis. (WBAY) - A man was arrested Thursday afternoon after a student spotted him near Fond du Lac High School with a handgun and he ran away when approached by police, law enforcement said.

The Fond du Lac Police Department said at around 12:46 p.m., a Fond du Lac High School student reported seeing a man near the school pond with what appeared to be a firearm in his waistband.

School resource officers and Fond du Lac patrol officers responded to the area and found the man matching the description. When officers tried to contact him, police said he ran away. Officers were able to apprehend him after a brief foot chase.

Officers searched the area with a K9 and found a 9mm handgun and a loaded 9mm magazine nearby. Police said the man, only identified as a Fond du Lac resident,
