PORTLAND, Ore. — Two very different accounts emerged during the second day of a high-stakes trial between the state of Oregon and the Trump administration. Portland police officials testified that officers have the situation under control outside the ICE facility. Federal officers, meanwhile, described being overwhelmed, exhausted and in need of help from the National Guard.

The state of Oregon, California and the city of Portland are suing the Trump administration, seeking a permanent injunction. They argue Trump overstepped his authority by ordering the deployment of National Guard troops to Portland a month ago.

Willamette University law professor Laura Appleman told KGW that the timeline is critical to the case.
