MOBILE, Ala. (WKRG) — Fresh paint now marks new traffic lanes and street parking on St. Anthony Street in downtown Mobile.

It's all a part of the city's effort to make downtown safer.

This is the first day drivers have seen the change, and many already think it's making a positive impact.

"They're real fast about it, and that's nice," St. Anthony resident Tonya Hutcherson said. "They get in and get out."

St. Anthony between Broad and Royal streets now has west and east-bound traffic.

The switch is only one part of the Downtown Street Optimization project, which aims to make downtown more pedestrian-friendly.
