A pediatrician with Kaiser Permanente joined KCRA 3 on Thursday to share safety tips ahead of Halloween.

Dr. Candace Jones recommended rationing candy and encouraged parents to give their children a light snack or healthy dinner before trick-or-treating.

She said that eating candy with a meal is actually better than on its own because it can help reduce the risk of cavities.

Jones also demonstrated a proper pumpkin carving technique to reduce the risk of knife injuries.

And she urged trick-or-treaters to bring a flashlight or blinking lights to stay illuminated while out in the dark.
