ASHEVILLE – The nearly mile-long Nasty Branch Greenway , which will run along the creek through Southside, is slated to begin construction early- to mid-next year.

Signage will be included as part of the project, recognizing the rich history and cultural legacy of the Southside neighborhood, once home to Asheville’s largest Black population , before the Urban Renewal program in the 1970s wiped out communities along Southside Avenue.

Walter Ear, interim Capital Management Director, said that the city leveraged local funds to get a federal funding grant for the roughly $4.3 million project. Design will be finished by the end of the year. Construction will last about 18 months.
