The executive director of Amnesty International in Brazil, physician Jurema Werneck, described the police operation Contenção (“Containment”), in Complexo do Alemão and Complexo da Penha favelas in Rio de Janeiro on Tuesday (Oct. 28) as “disastrous.” The most recent official count indicates that the operation resulted in 119 deaths.

Jurema Werneck said there is misinformation regarding the success of the operation. “Public security authorities claim it was a planned operation. [But] an operation with so many deaths?” she questioned during an interview with the news program Repórter Brasil on TV Brasil.
