BETHESDA, Md. — Fifteen years after the brutal killing of American University professor Sue Ann Marcum, a Montgomery County jury has convicted Jorge Rueda Landeros of second-degree murder .
After an eight-day trial, jurors found that new DNA evidence—missing for years—helped seal the case against Landeros, a dual U.S. and Mexican citizen who fled to Mexico following Marcum’s 2010 death.
“It’s been a long week and a half, and a longer 15 years,” said Alan Marcum, the victim’s brother. “It is impossible for words to express my gratitude deeply enough.”
Prosecutors say Marcum, 52, was found dead in her Bethesda home in what initially appeared to be a robbery. Court documents show she died from blunt force trauma and asphyxiation.
