The worst of the storms are yet to come, a senior meteorologist has said, following a wild and destructive night of hail and storms stretching from Queensland into New South Wales.

Sky News presenter Julia Seymour said storm activity will peak on Saturday following a wet and dark Halloween on Friday.

The conditions were dire as a parade at the Sydney Ghost Festival - Australia’s first dedicated Halloween street festival, was called off due to heavy rain.

"Today is peak of the storm activity as the atmosphere becomes increasingly unstable, thanks to an upper-level trough making itself known,” Seymour said.
