LUFKIN, Texas (KTRE) - What started as a dream to help feed the hungry has now turned into a more urgent mission for Bethel Church, as thousands of East Texans will miss their SNAP payments Saturday.
Friday, Bethel Church decided to distribute free groceries to families in need, in light of governmental budget cuts.
“A child or an elderly (person), anybody going to bed hungry because they don’t have it, I just can’t bear it,” Stephanie Nash, the coordinator for The Storehouse at Bethel Church, said.
And the idea to feed the hungry didn’t spark recently for Nash. She says it took months to get the donated building and to prepare everything, but when she found out SNAP benefits were being cut, the church sprang into action to help serve the community.
