CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) - What was supposed to be a 50th birthday celebration and vacation turned out to be something much different for Erin Grimm.

She found out she was sick and had colon cancer.

What a difference a year makes. Grimm had surgery to remove half of her colon and other organs the tumor was invading, part of her stomach, the pancreas, spleen, and gallbladder.

Her gastrointestinal tract was also reconstructed.

It wasn't easy. Fighting cancer never is. The procedure lasted nearly 10 hours.

And Grimm has a message for people who aren't feeling quite right, like she was one year ago.
