JACKSONVILLE, N.C. (WITN) - Onslow County’s Fifth Annual Veterans Pow Wow kicked off Friday morning in Jacksonville.

Dennis Zotigh came from the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C. to help teach about Native American culture.

Zotigh, a descendant of Sitting Bear and No Retreat, both principal War Chiefs of the Kiowas, told stories and performed traditional dances for the people in attendance and wants them to know that Native Americans still exist today.

The Pow Wow honors the service and sacrifice of Native American veterans while sharing the rich traditions of Indigenous peoples with the broader community.

The Pow Wow continues this weekend at the American Legion where they will continue to celebrate Native American culture.
