When André Villas-Boas was Chelsea manager he walked into a press conference and declared that his club’s squad bore no comparison with that of Manchester City. It was March 2012 and Villas-Boas was gone after the next game.

A senior figure at Chelsea was almost banging his head against a wall in frustration outside the press conference room because he had specifically told Villas-Boas to stop talking about other clubs. And then he did it anyway.
