An outdoor open flame grill placed too close to a structure led to $500,000 in damage to a South Windsor home Saturday afternoon.

Fire broke out around 3 p.m. at the residence in the 1800 block of Longfellow Avenue.

Multiple emergency vehicles responded to the blaze.

Windsor Fire and Rescue Service crews battling the fire discovered it had extended to the second level of the home and into the attic.

Essex-Windsor Emergency Medical Service personnel and Windsor police assisted at the scene but no injuries were reported.

Officials said the residents were out of the house when firefighters arrived.

Once the blaze was extinguished, investigators determined the fire originated outside where a grill had been placed too close to a structure made of combustible material.
