WALLINGFORD, Conn. (WFSB) - A teenager was arrested for allegedly scamming a 72-year-old man out of $300,000 in Wallingford.
The suspect was identified as Nyieshia Upchurch, 19, from Bridgeport.
On March 4, police received a complaint from a man who had fallen victim to a Publishers Clearing House scam.
According to police, the man received multiple phone calls from unknown people who told him he had won a prize of $9.6 million.
In order to collect the prize, the victim was told to send the tax money for the prize.
Police said the victim’s family discovered that seven checks were written to unknown people. Five of those checks were written out to Nyieshia Upchurch.
This began a lengthy investigation which resulted in the arrest of Upchurch on Oct. 22.
