A British teenager, Bella Culley, is set to be released from prison after nearly six months in custody for drug smuggling. The 19-year-old was arrested at Tbilisi International Airport in Georgia on May 10, where authorities discovered 11kg of cannabis and over 400g of hashish in her luggage. Culley, a student nurse from Billingham, Teesside, had been awaiting sentencing after admitting to the charges. Her family reportedly paid a fine of 500,000 Georgian Lari (£138,000) as part of a plea deal with prosecutors. Initially, the court had demanded a higher fine of 800,000 Georgian Lari (£220,000) for her release. Her lawyer, Mr Salakaia, indicated that the amount paid would influence the length of her sentence, with the possibility of avoiding jail time altogether. He had previously requested bail, citing Culley’s advanced pregnancy, but this was denied by Judge Giorgi Gelashvili due to a lack of legal grounds. Culley is reportedly expecting to give birth soon, and her lawyer is seeking a pardon from Georgia's Prime Minister Mikheil Kavelashvili, which could allow her to leave the country immediately. If the pardon is not granted, she may be transferred to a hospital to give birth and could raise her child in a special room set up for mothers in custody. During a previous hearing, Culley expressed concern about her baby’s future, asking her lawyer, "Will I be able to take the baby with me if I go back to jail?" He reassured her, stating, "Nobody is going to take the baby away from you." Culley’s case has drawn attention due to her claims that she was coerced into drug trafficking by gangsters who threatened her and her family. She stated, "I didn't want to do this. I was forced by torture... All I wanted to do was to travel." It remains unclear whether she will serve her sentence in a women’s prison in Tbilisi, be placed under house arrest, or be extradited to the UK.
